Bolivia
Bolivia
Your international flight should arrive at Viru Viru Airport in Santa Cruz, where you will then connect to a flight to Sucre. The guide will welcome you at the airport in Sucre and we will transfer you to the hotel. In the afternoon after lunch, we will take a tour to visit the main museums of this historic city. We will visit the ASUR textile museum, where original textiles are on display; San Felipe de Neri, a former convent, now a school and viewpoint; the Monastery of La Recoleta, a viewpoint; and the Casa de la Libertad, where Bolivia's declaration of independence was signed. At the end of the tour, we will return to the hotel.
We leave early for Tarabuco. After a 2-hour drive, we will arrive at the Sunday market, a meeting place for locals who exchange products (barter) and sell food, textiles, and other items. Here, we will observe the traditional clothing of the locals, colorful handmade fabrics that typically represent the identity of each community. Without a doubt, we will be able to feel the authenticity of the region's culture. After lunch at a restaurant, we will visit the Amay Wasi craft center in Tarabuco to learn about the dyeing and weaving process, and we will learn to weave with our own hands. We return to Sucre.
We bid farewell to Sucre and head to Potosí, a historic city that was very important during colonial times, the center of exploitation of Cerro Rico, considered one of the richest sources of silver in history. We will walk through the streets of the city center and have lunch. Then we will visit the Casa de la Moneda, where we will discover the history of ancient coin manufacturing. At the end of the visit, we will depart for Uyuni by private transport. Arrival in Uyuni, dinner, and overnight stay.
We depart from Uyuni to the salt flats in a 4×4 vehicle. We begin our adventure with a stop at the Train Cemetery, an unusual landscape of disused locomotives. We continued on to the town of Colchani, where salt is processed using traditional methods, and visited a salt processing plant. We entered the Uyuni salt flats and stopped at Incahuasi Island. From its summit, surrounded by giant cacti, we could appreciate the surprising expanse of the salt sea and see the majestic Tunupa Volcano. We will then enjoy lunch in the middle of the salt flats. Afterwards, we will head to the town of Coquesa where we will participate in an activity with the local community, learn about the cultivation and harvesting of quinoa, the art of weaving and dyeing, and we will be able to walk with llamas on the edges of the salt flats. Finally, we will watch the sunset and head back to the hotel.
After breakfast, we will depart for the town of Chiquini. We will visit the “La Llamita Museum,” observe salt blocks and sculptures, and enter the Chiquini cave, where we will discover magnificent calcified magma formations. Then we will head to the volcano viewpoint and begin a short 15-minute hike to see the Coquesa Mummies, mummified bodies from the time of the Aymara lords. Return to Uyuni and board the sleeper bus to La Paz.
Departure from the hotel to the pre-Inca site of Tiwanaku, where the archaeological remains found there express the great knowledge and technology possessed by the Tiwanaku people. They worshipped the Sun God “Wiracocha” and Mother Earth “Pachamama,” facts that we can see reflected in their constructions. Among these, the Gate of the Sun, the various monoliths, the temples of Kalasasaya, Akapana, and the Semi-Subterranean Temple stand out. After lunch, we will head to Tuni, a town located at the foot of the Cordillera Real mountain range, where we will be welcomed by the families of the community. In the evening, we will have a traditional Andean gathering. A musical group from the neighboring town of Chuñawi will spend the evening with us. This will be an opportunity to dance and chat around the fire.
In the morning, after a traditional breakfast of buñuelos (a type of doughnut) and api (a delicious hot drink made from purple corn), we will accompany the llamas and alpacas to their pastures. Then we will set off for a few hours towards the Condoriri massif with our guide, who will show us the medicinal and nutritious plants used by the Aymara people. During this hike, we will visit an active tin mine at an altitude of over 4,500 meters (depending on the physical condition of the participants and the time available). Return to the village of Tuni.
After breakfast in the community of Tuni, we say goodbye to our hosts and begin the return journey to La Paz. Upon arrival in the city, transfer to the hotel for check-in and accommodation. The rest of the day is free to enjoy La Paz at your own pace. This is the perfect opportunity to stroll through its vibrant streets, explore local markets, visit cafés, or shop for handicrafts and souvenirs to take home. You may also choose to simply relax at the hotel and reflect on the unforgettable cultural and natural experiences lived throughout the journey.
It is time to conclude this enriching journey through Bolivia. At the scheduled time, transfer from the hotel to La Paz International Airport, accompanied by the guide, to board your departure flight. As you leave, you will carry with you lasting memories of colonial cities, ancestral cultures, breathtaking landscapes, and authentic community encounters that make Bolivia such a unique and meaningful destination.
