Today,
we depart early from Sanliurfa to Mardin, 240 km away. Our first visit is
Ancient Dara.
Dara is an ancient city in Mesopotamia and a
key trade centre on the Silk Road. We will explore water channels, cisterns,
rock tombs, and other ruins. Then, we'll continue towards Midyat via Nusaybin,
with a coffee break by the Soğuksu River.
Midyat is a city of tolerance where religions such as Islam, Christianity, and Yezidism and languages such as Turkish, Kurdish, Arabic, and Syriac meet. It resembles a medieval city with stone mansions, arched passages, and Syriac churches with high bell towers.
Lunch break in a local restaurant. Visit the Midyat Guest House, known for its unique architecture. You’ll also have free time to shop in the local bazaar, famous for silver and gold jewellery crafted by filigree artisans. Arrive and visit Mardin City.
Deyrul-Zafaran
Monastery, Built in the 5th century, was once an important religious centre for
the Assyrians. The complex includes several notable structures, such as the Mor
Hanonya Church, the Sun Temple, the Virgin Mary Church, and the House of Saints,
all showcasing exceptional Mardin stonemasonry. Notably, Deyrul-Zafaran was the
official seat of the patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Church until 1932.
Dinner and accommodation in Mardin
(Breakfast
and Lunch included)
We
begin our Mardin tour by walking through the narrow streets of this city, which
is regarded as the cradle of Mesopotamian civilisation. Mardin is known for its
harmonious coexistence of people from various religions and sects. As you
explore, you will encounter numerous unique door knockers and beautifully
carved old doors, each with its history. The tiny passageways that form these
narrow streets are called Abbaras, which are characteristic features of the
city.
Our
itinerary includes visits to several significant sites, such as the Mardin
Museum, Latifiye Mosque, the Great Mosque of Mardin, and the historic Post
Office Building, which showcases the region’s exceptional stonework.
After
sightseeing in Mardin, you will have some free time to shop. Explore the local
market, where you can find Mardin's famous almond candy, regional desserts, and
jewellery made from silver, gold, and precious stones. Finally, we will visit
the Kasimiye Madrasah (Mosque Kebir), which is notable for its extraordinary
architecture and its role in providing university-level education during the
Seljuk period.
