Tour Overview

Siem Reap is the gateway to the magnificent Angkor temples – one of mankind’s most astonishing architectural achievements. The historical park covers an area of 400 sq-km, with abundant Khmer era buildings dating from the 9th to the 15th century. At the heart of these World Heritage acclaimed structures is Angkor Wat. This is figuratively, ‘heaven on earth’ as it is the earthly representation of Mount Meru, the abode of ancient gods. At its peak, the Angkor complex was the largest pre-industrial city in the world. It is now the heart and soul of Cambodia and a state symbol that is featured on the national flag. The gateway city to Angkor, Siem Reap is the fastest growing destination in Cambodia and has excellent golf courses, global hotel chains and lively nightlife on Pub Street.

Itinerary

Day 1

Get stuck straight into this 4-day temple-hopping adventure at the remote Rolous Group. We will be met at Siem Reap International Airport and drive to the hotel for check-in. We then have some time to settle into our surroundings with lunch at our leisure. Siem Reap is packed full of tasty options, ranging from local to international cuisine. In the afternoon, we start our exploration of the religious structures that dot Angkor Archaeological Park at the less-visited temples found at Rolous Group. Sitting about 13 km from Siem Reap city, the group of small temples – Preah Ko, Bakong and Lolei – once served as the seat of Hariharalaya and was the first capital of the Khmer Empire. We then return to the hotel in time for dinner at a local restaurant.

Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 2

Take a step back in time and delve into the jewel of Cambodia’s crown, the temples of Angkor Wat. We start the day at the South Gate of Angkor Thom, the Khmer Empire’s last capital built in the late-12th century. Inside the city’s ancient walls, we visit Bayon to stand in the shadows of its hundreds of giant carved faces; 11th century Baphoun; the small Hindu temple of Baksei Chamkrong; and Elephant Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King. After lunch, we head to the star of the show, incredible 12th century Angkor Wat. The architectural feat stood at the heart of the Khmer Empire. In the evening, dinner is at our leisure before we barter for bargains at vibrant Angkor Night Market.

Please note: This site is closed on Buddhist religious days and four days a month, as per the lunar calendar. Visitors are required to keep their knees and shoulders covered at all sacred sites. The guide and transport are available until 9 pm.

Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 3

Today’s temple-trekking trip delivers more off-the-beaten-track sacred spots and iconic Ta Prohm. After breakfast, we hit the road for Banteay Srei and Banteay Samre. Well-preserved 10th century Banteay Srei is famed for its pink sandstone walls adorned with apsara carvings. Banteay Samre is a 12th century Hindu temple built in the style of Angkor Wat. On our way to lunch at a local restaurant, we stop at a village and, depending on the season, watch rice being planted and sugar palm being made. In the afternoon, we head to Neak Pean, and Preah Khan, built by King Jayavarman VII to honour his father. Our final temple of the day is root-riddled Ta Prohm, made famous after featuring in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider starring Angelina Jolie. On our way back to the city, we stop at Theam’s Gallery, which doubles up as an art gallery. Dinner is at your leisure.

Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 4

Experience life on the revered Tonle Sap Lake before diving into Cambodian culture. After breakfast, we hit the road to the Tonle Sap Lake to enjoy a gentle cruise to one of the fishing villages that dot the water. Here, we can see how life is lived as we sail past homes, schools and shops that bob on the water. We then head back to Siem Reap to delve into Cambodia’s rich culture at Artisans Angkor. The organisation has spent more than 2 decades rekindling the country’s traditional arts, training and employing artisans across the province. We meet artisans as they carry out silk weaving, stone and wood carving, lacquerware, and ceramics. We then enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, bringing an end to the tour.

Please note: The high-level water season is from mid-July to mid-February and the low-level water season runs the rest of the year.

We transfer to Siem Reap Airport for our departure flight to next destination.

Note: The itinerary is subject to last-minute change and modification depending on local conditions. If this occurs, we will provide an alternative activity.
