Itinerary

Day 1

  • Upon arrival at Iquitos International Airport, lodge representatives will assist you and transfer you to our office for an orientation about the journey and jungle tips. Then, we'll whisk you to Iquitos Port, where a fast boat will ferry you to Heliconia Amazon River Lodge via the Amazon River.
  • During the journey, you'll witness the merging of the Amazon and Nanay Rivers, and stop at Monkey Island to see protected monkey species. Back on the boat, enjoy the scenery until we reach the lodge, where you'll be welcomed with fruit juice before checking in and enjoying your first Amazonian meal.
  • In the afternoon, join our guides on a two-hour walk through the Yanamono reserve to spot flora and fauna. Return to the lodge for relaxation and a serene sunset. Then, embark on a magical open-boat ride through the river under the stars. Finally, return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2

  • Start the day with bird-watching, and observing various species gathering for breakfast. Take a boat to a creek with high bird diversity. Spot species like Tuki, Ringed Kingfisher, and Black-Collared Hawk. Return to the lodge for breakfast and head to the Yagua community to experience their traditions, including trying the "pucuna" hunting tool.
  • After lunch at the lodge, prepare for an artisanal fishing trip on an Amazon tributary. Learn traditional techniques and try your hand at piranha fishing. Look out for pink river dolphins during the expedition.
  • In the evening, embark on a thrilling night jungle walk around the lodge. Witness the jungle's nocturnal transformation and observe night creatures like frogs and snakes. Listen to the unique sounds of insects, birds, and owls. Return to the lodge for dinner and rest.

Day 3

  • After breakfast, we'll take a short boat ride to a lagoon on Yanamono Island, where we'll admire the majestic Victoria Regia, the queen of water lilies. Now known as Victoria Amazonica, this native flower of the shallow waters of the Amazon River basin mainly grows in lakes and swamps. We may see some white flowers on their first day of blooming, turning pink on the second day.
  • These imposing water and swamp plants can grow up to 1 meter in diameter and are pollinated by beetles. Victoria Amazonica is well known for its immense circular leaf, often depicted with a child sitting in the center to demonstrate its magnitude and strength. Return to the lodge for a delicious lunch.
  • In the afternoon, we'll visit an artisanal sugar mill to learn about the process of distilling sugarcane juice. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay

Day 4

  • Savor a delightful breakfast before embarking on a canoe tour of the Amazon River, an activity that allows for safe paddling on the world's mightiest river. Immerse yourself in the flooded jungle or explore the small tributary creeks, taking in the natural riches slowly and without noise to avoid disturbing the wildlife.
  • Return to the lodge for our farewell lunch, complete the check-out process, and depart for Iquitos. Depending on your flight schedule back to Lima, airport transfers will be arranged.
