Day 06 – Sigiriya
Start your day with a delightful breakfast at the hotel before embarking on a visit to the Kingdom of Sigiriya, one of the most fascinating and iconic locations in Sri Lanka. Sigiriya’s story is deeply rooted in a rivalry between two brothers.
The magnificent Sigiriya Rock Fortress was built by King Kashyapa during the 5th century. According to legend, King Kashyapa constructed this incredible fortress to protect himself from his brother, King Mogallana, who was the rightful heir to the throne. To secure his position, King Kashyapa built the rock fortress atop a 200-meter high rock column, with a sophisticated system of defenses. However, the story of Sigiriya is tragic, as King Kashyapa was eventually defeated by King Mogallana, and the fortress was destroyed.
Before becoming a royal palace, Sigiriya was originally a Buddhist monastery. After the destruction of the palace, it returned to its monastic roots. Sigiriya was rediscovered by Europeans in 1831 when Major Jonathan Forbes stumbled upon it during his journey from Polonnaruwa. The excavations that followed have revealed Sigiriya’ s full grandeur. Experience Sri Lankan Village Life: Immerse yourself in the authentic charm of rural Sri Lanka with a visit to a nearby village, where you’ll have the opportunity to interact with locals and learn about their traditional way of life.
Next, visit Pidurangala Rock, located a few kilometers north of Sigiriya. Pidurangala has its own rich history intertwined with Sigiriya. When King Kashyapa was constructing the Sigiriya fortress, he relocated the monks living around Sigiriya to a new monastery on Pidurangala Rock.
The Pidurangala Rock offers a more challenging climb than Sigiriya, but the reward is an incredible panoramic view of the surrounding landscape and a breathtaking view of Sigiriya Rock. The ancient cave temple at Pidurangala houses objects that reflect Buddhist, Hindu, and even Western influences. It is believed that the stupa near the entrance marks the spot where King Kashyapa was cremated.
After exploring, return to your hotel for an overnight stay in Sigiriya.
