Cappadocia is surrounded by numerous valleys, fairy chimneys, cave churches, and other historic monuments, including the highly-visited Derinkuyu underground city. This underground marvel, which dates back to the Assyrian colonies, was used by the first Christians fleeing persecution from the Roman Empire in the second century. It has eleven floors that extend to a depth of approximately 85 m. During times of war, it provided shelter for thousands of people, along with livestock and food stores.
Following that, we will embark on a 3-kilometer hike to Ihlara Valley, where we will see natural wonders and numerous ancient churches nestled within volcanic rock caves. The first settlers, who were Christians fleeing Roman soldiers, built these churches. The frescoes adorning these rock-carved churches in Ihlara Valley have survived to this day as a one-of-a-kind historical treasure. These churches and settlements, which feature intricate frescoes carved into the rocks during the early years of Christianity, are spread across the 14-kilometer-long Ihlara Valley, which stretches from Ihlara to Selime.
We will continue our journey to Belisirma village, which has a long history dating back to before the Seljuk era. The village is situated near the Melendiz river and is home to several churches, including Direkli, Bahattin Samanligi, St. Georgios (Kirkdamalti), Bezirhane, St. Ermolaos, and many others. We will head to Selime, which marks the end point of Ihlara Valley. As you exit the valley, you will be greeted by the Selime Cathedral. The Selime Cathedral, which dates back to the 8th and 11th centuries, is the largest cathedral in Cappadocia and was built on two floors. Inside the cathedral, there are depictions of the ascension of Jesus and Mary, among other scenes.
The final destination of the tour is Agzikara Han Caravanserai, a historic landmark built during the Seljuk period on the Silk Road in Aksaray Province. This caravanserai is renowned for its significance and ornate design, and is considered one of the most important examples of caravanserais built by non-imperial people. It is also a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
