The Ihlara Valley is a breathtakingly lush canyon that boasts the deepest gorge in Asia Minor, reaching a height of 110 meters in some places and spanning 14 kilometers. The Melendiz stream flows through the valley, which served as a refuge for early Christians fleeing the oppression of the Roman Empire. They settled in the valley under Seljuk protection and lived there for a long time. There are 105 ancient churches in the valley, 14 of which are open to visitors, including Agacalti, Sumbullu, Yilanli, Kokar, Prenliseki, Egritas, Direkli, Saint Georgeus, Karagedik, Ala, Bezirhane, Bahattin Samanligi, and Batkin, all of which have frescoes inside.
The main difference between Ihlara and other Cappadocian valleys is the Melendiz River, which runs from the bottom of the valley in the village of Ihlara, painting the gorge in shades of blue and green. During a hike through the valley, visitors can explore several cave churches and houses.
