Itinerary

Day 1

Pergamon was an ancient Anatolian city located in modern-day Bergama, Izmir Province. The city was strategically important because it overlooked the Caicus River Valley (Bakircay), which provided access from Pergamon to the Aegean shore. Pergamon rose to prominence as the capital of the Attalid rulers during the Hellenistic period. The settlement dates back to prehistoric times, specifically the 7th, 6th, and 5th centuries. The name "Pergamon" is derived from the words "Perg" or "Berg," which mean "fortress" or "fortified location." Pliny the Elder, a first-century BC author and philosopher, described the ancient city as "the most famous and respected city of Asia Minor."

In 2014, Pergamon was added to the list of World Cultural Heritage sites. Visitors can explore the Temple of Athena, an example of Doric architecture, as well as the colossal statues of the Roman Emperors Trajan and Hadrian. The Temple of Trajan also showcases appealing architectural details. Additionally, visitors can see the Library of Pergamon, the Altar of Zeus, one of the most famous theaters of the ancient world, the Serapis Temple (also known as the Red Basilica), the Sanctuary of Asclepius, and more. Galen, who was born and raised in Pergamon, was also the most authoritative source on European medicine from the second century until the Renaissance. Following our cultural excursion, our agency recommends a visit to an onyx jewelry store.
