Tour Overview

Al-Andalus left a great cultural legacy, mainly in Andalusia, which is still present in cities such as Granada or Córdoba, and they maintain the beautiful Muslim architecture.

Between the 8th and 15th centuries, a large part of the Iberian Peninsula was occupied by Muslims. The first settlements were in Andalusia and then they spread, which is why the greatest splendor of Muslim culture can be seen in Andalusia. Islam left a very important mark on Hispanic culture, in music, cuisine, language and, above all, in architecture. Hence, the Andalusian community is full of temples, mosques and other buildings that are the result of this period of invasion.

An essential trip to discover the spectacular buildings of the Muslim legacy, as well as an inherited gastronomy that is now world-renowned.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Seville from airport / train station and private transfer to hotel.

In the afternoon, our guide will pick you up to visit the Cathedral. This spectacular monument began its construction in 1401 on the site of the old Almohad style Great Mosque, of which it preserves the Patio de los Naranjos and the minaret, the famous Giralda. This magnificent Gothic temple is considered one of the largest Christian temples in the world. We continue the visit to the Alcazar.

The Real Alcázar of Seville is one of the oldest palaces in use in the world. A palace that has lived through different stages in time, from the end of the 11th century to the present day.

Fortress palace ordered to be built by Abd Al Raman III, it is profusely made up of rooms exquisitely decorated with plasterwork, tiling and coffered ceilings, which combine well with the splendid gardens and the water, thus creating a complex that is difficult to forget.

We finish the visit by taking a tour of the most representative spaces related to the Andalusian world, such as the Jewish Quarter, the Torre del Oro and the Arco del Postigo.

Return to the hotel, free dinner and accommodation

Total duration of the visit approx. 4 hours.

Day 2

After a good breakfast, we made a full day excursion to one of the most important areas of what was the Taifa of Seville, becoming one of the most extensive. The Sierra de Huelva area is a very important and strategic enclave with the border of the Taifa de Badajoz. Almonaster la Real and Aracena, will be two key places that for years have developed a very important urban development. Proof of this is the beautiful Almonaster Mosque that we will visit on our first stop. It is a heritage complex of exceptional historical and artistic value, being the only mosque in Spain that has survived practically intact to this day in a rural area. Almonaster also hides beautiful corners as a white town in the province of Huelva. After a visit we continue our journey to Aracena.

Upon arrival in Aracena, we will visit the castle located at the top of the hill of the town, with impressive views of the entire region. Upon reaching the castle, inside we can see the houses from the Andalusian period and the different rooms of the medieval fortress. You enter the castle grounds through the postern or secondary door of the Alcázar. This space, which is located in the highest and eastern part of the hill, is what makes up the fortified area of Aracena next to the parade ground.

We continue the visit to the city center, to discover the public laundries and the hermitage of San Pedro.

Visiting Aracena and not trying its gastronomy is almost a crime. Known for the famous and rich acorn-fed hams and a first-class cold meat, our colleague will recommend a restaurant to enjoy the traditional dishes of the city.

After lunch, we will visit the Grutas de las Maravillas. Las Grutas is a spring of inexhaustible beauty, forged by time on nature itself, with the help of elements as simple as water and stone. The exceptional set of galleries, rooms, lakes and underground courses that time and water have carved out. Probably one of the most beautiful and best preserved caves in the world.

At the end of the visit, we return to Seville.

Free dinner and accommodation

Approximate total duration: 9 hours

Day 3

We leave Ishbiliya (Seville) behind to go to Qurtuba (Córdoba), but first we must stop en route to visit one of the most important enclaves within what was the disintegration of the Caliphate of Córdoba. We are talking about Carmona, getting to have its own Taifa independent from that of Seville. Upon arrival, we will visit the Alcázar of King Don Pedro, the Puerta de Alcázar of Seville and the majestic Puerta de Córdoba. On a tour where we can discover the beautiful corners of the Andalusian and Jewish past of its whitewashed streets. The visit lasts approximately 2 hours.

We resume the road to Córdoba, upon arrival, we do the check-in and free lunch.

In the afternoon, we will take a guided tour of the city. We start with the Mosque, being the most important monument in the entire Islamic West and one of the most amazing in the world. Its history summarizes the complete evolution of the Umayyad style in Spain, in addition to the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles of Christian construction.

The place that today occupies the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba (World Heritage Site) seems to have been, since ancient times, dedicated to the worship of different divinities. We will visit the different rooms and the beautiful Patio de los Naranjos (ablution courtyard), we continue the visit to the Alcázar de los Reyes Católicos, where in Andalusian times the place of residence of the different emirs was established.

We will walk through its streets and suburbs, the most characteristic and unknown is that of the Axerquía, being the most extensive of the entire Islamic empire of the peninsula. We finish the visit by tasting some traditional dishes of Umayya origin in a traditional and non-touristy tavern that have largely remained in our days.

After the tasting, hotel accommodation or free time to stroll around the city at night (highly recommended)

Total duration of the day: 9 hours

Day 4

Today we will enjoy an intense but very satisfactory day in terms of content, after breakfast, we check-out and move to Medina Azahara, on the outskirts of the city of Córdoba. Its location is at the foot of the so-called Mount of the Bride where the ruins of the Archaeological Complex of Madinat al-Zahra, declared a World Heritage Site, are located. Its construction, begun in the year 936, is due to the first caliph of Al-Andalus, Abderramán III, in honor of his favorite Al Zahra. Upon arrival, we will visit the Wall, the House of the Viziers, the remains of the Aljama Mosque and the Gardens. A very complete visit of about two and a half hours.

At the end, we start our trip to Mâlaqa (Málaga), but on our way, we will make a stop in Antaqira (Antequera). Upon arrival we will visit the imposing Alcazaba that occupied the entire crown of the hill within the walled complex of the Islamic medina, being the Torre del Homenaje, with an angular plan, the most important of the entire site. The area of the hill where it is located, shows us incredible views towards the Antequera countryside. We will also visit the Collegiate Church of Antequera, built near the Alcazaba.

In this city, we will enjoy the gastronomy, recommending tasting the “porra antequerana”, the sister of Salmorejo.

After lunch, we resume the trip to Malaga. Upon arrival, check-in, free dinner and accommodation
