Roam the archaeological site of Naxos, the first Grecian civilization in Sicily. Built on the volcanic peninsula of Schisò, you'll be able to walk amid the ancient ruins of a once-great city.
As you walk through the archaeological park of Naxos, you may find it hard to imagine that it was once an important maritime settlement. Yet so many people have spent their lives on the ground you are treading on, and the nearby port would have housed a fleet of triremes. But in 403 BC large parts of the city were destroyed by Dionysius I of Syracuse and the city never recovered.
Next to the walls of Naxos is the Archaeological Museum, where you can find various archaeological discoveries. See the painted terracotta that would have decorated the roofs of sacred buildings, as well as the reconstruction of a large pediment decorated with a Gorgon.
