Traveling from Kathmandu to Pokhara by tourist bus is one of the most popular and scenic overland journeys in Nepal. This route offers stunning views of rivers, hills, rural villages, and a glimpse into the everyday life of the Nepali countryside. It’s an ideal option for travelers seeking comfort, affordability, and an authentic experience.
Pokhara Valley, nestled beneath the majestic Annapurna Himalayan range, is one of the most beautiful and serene destinations in Nepal. Sightseeing in Pokhara offers a harmonious blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and peaceful lakeside charm, making it a must-visit location for travelers of all kinds.
A typical sightseeing tour in Pokhara begins with a visit to Phewa Lake, the second-largest lake in Nepal, where travelers can enjoy peaceful boat rides while admiring the reflection of the snow-capped Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain) on the water’s surface. In the middle of the lake lies the tranquil Tal Barahi Temple, accessible only by boat, which adds a spiritual touch to the experience.
One of the highlights of Pokhara sightseeing is the early morning trip to Sarangkot, a hilltop viewpoint famous for its stunning sunrise views over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. As the sun rises, the peaks are bathed in golden light, creating an unforgettable panorama.
The tour continues with visits to natural wonders like Davis Falls, a powerful underground waterfall that disappears into a deep cave, and Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave, located just across from the falls. Inside the cave lies a sacred Shiva temple and a hidden view of the waterfall from within.
Another key attraction is the World Peace Pagoda, perched on a hilltop overlooking the valley. From here, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the lake, Pokhara city, and the surrounding mountains. The pagoda itself is a symbol of peace and offers a peaceful environment for reflection.
For those interested in culture and history, the International Mountain Museum provides fascinating insights into the mountaineering history of Nepal, the culture of Himalayan people, and stories of legendary climbers. Meanwhile, the Bindhyabasini Temple, one of the oldest temples in Pokhara, offers a glimpse into local religious practices and a serene spot for spiritual visitors.
Finally, a walk through Lakeside Pokhara, the vibrant tourist hub, allows visitors to relax, shop for handicrafts, enjoy delicious local and international cuisine, and soak in the laid-back atmosphere.
The drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu by tourist bus is one of the most scenic and enjoyable overland journeys in Nepal. Spanning a distance of approximately 200–210 kilometers, this route takes around 6 to 8 hours, depending on road and weather conditions. It’s a popular and affordable travel option for both domestic and international travelers.
The journey begins in the early morning, usually around 7:00 AM, from Lakeside Pokhara, the city's main tourist area. Buses are comfortable and come in different categories — from standard tourist buses to deluxe and VIP coaches with added amenities like air-conditioning, reclining seats, and Wi-Fi.
As the bus departs Pokhara, you’ll gradually leave behind the calm lakes and snow-capped mountains, descending into the lush green hills that define Nepal’s middle terrain. The road follows the winding Prithvi Highway, a scenic route that closely follows the Marsyangdi and Trishuli Rivers for much of the journey.
Along the way, you’ll pass:
Rolling terraced farmlands
Small traditional villages
Dense forests and hillside settlements
Occasional views of the Himalayan foothills, depending on the weather
There are usually 2 to 3 scheduled stops along the route — one for breakfast or tea, another for lunch, and additional short bathroom breaks. These stops are typically made at roadside restaurants offering local Nepali meals like dal bhat, noodles, momos, and snacks in clean and scenic environments.
Though the road is beautiful, it can be narrow and winding, especially through hilly sections. During or after the monsoon season, travel may take longer due to potential roadworks or landslides, so some flexibility is recommended.
As you approach Kathmandu Valley, the landscape gradually shifts from rural countryside to a more urban environment. The bus eventually arrives at Sorhakhutte or Balaju Bus Park, near Thamel — the tourist hub of Kathmandu.
Final departure marks the end of your journey in Nepal. On this day, you will be transferred from your hotel to Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu) as per your flight schedule. A representative will assist with your luggage and ensure a smooth check-in process. As you leave with unforgettable memories of Nepal’s natural beauty, culture, and hospitality, we wish you a safe journey and hope to welcome you again in the future.
