The Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is one of Zanzibar’s most popular half-day excursions, located about 5–6 km northwest of Stone Town and reachable by a scenic 25–30 minute boat ride.
This historic island offers a unique blend of Zanzibar’s past, wildlife, and ocean beauty. Originally used in the 1860s as a holding place for rebellious slaves and later intended to serve as a prison, the island was never actually used as a jail. Instead, it became a quarantine station for yellow fever cases during the colonial era.
Today, Prison Island is a peaceful tourist destination famous for its giant Aldabra tortoises, some of which are over 100–150 years old. Visitors can get up close, feed them, and learn about ongoing conservation efforts.
The tour also includes exploring the historic prison ruins, relaxing on the island’s white sandy beaches, and enjoying snorkeling in the crystal-clear turquoise waters filled with vibrant coral reefs and marine life
