Kigali
Welcome to Rwanda! The country of 1000 hills.
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will receive assistance from airport personnel who will guide you towards the Covid-19 testing center located inside the airport. Following the test, you will be escorted out of the airport where your driver guide will be waiting to transfer you to Onomo Hotel for check-in and an overnight stay, which includes breakfast.
Have your breakfast at leisure. If the results were out negative, you're clear to resume your tour. Your driver-guide will pick you up from the hotel reception to drive you for Kigali Genocide Memorial museum.
Kigali Genocide Memorial
This is an extremely moving, challenging, educational, and ultimately inspiring memorial and a great place to understand the cause, tragedy, and successful rebuilding post-genocide. The reconciliation and rebuilding have been miraculous, and these memorials are built to inform, educate and prevent such a tragedy to ever occur again.
The tour is very transparent and educational but very somber and humbling when you realize that over 250,000 deceased are buried on the site of the memorial. Guaranteed you will feel every emotion during this visit.
The most common question that goes through your mind is “would I be capable of that level of forgiveness if I found myself in this situation.” That’s a true inspiration.
After this activity, we will transfer embark on our vehicle for our 2.5 hours scenic transfer to Volcanoes National Park.
Transfer to Volcanoes National Park. (2.5 hours)
If you thought Kigali's 7 hills is why Rwanda is also known as The Land of a Thousand Hills, then you are in for a treat on the transfer to Volcanoes National Park. The 2.5-hour transfer will ascend through the endless mountains and hills and provide excellent opportunities for scenic photographs as you pass through the local villages and farms.
Experience a trek of a lifetime and get up close and personal with rare mountain gorillas. With only around 1063 of these magnificent creatures left in the world, and 1/3 of them residing in the Volcanoes National Park, this is an opportunity not to be missed.
Your day starts with an early breakfast, followed by a transfer to the park headquarters for check-in. Here, you will receive a briefing about the trek and gorilla behavior, and be divided into groups based on your fitness level. The trek can take anywhere from 2-6 hours, depending on the movements of the animals. This is considered one of the greatest natural animal encounters on the planet.
Rangers and trackers will lead you deep into the forest, up and down rugged terrain, until you finally meet these harmonious creatures. After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and to freshen up before a 2.5-hour scenic transfer back to Kigali.
Later in the afternoon, take a break at the lodge to swap stories about your experience. At 3 pm, we will drive to the Ibyi’Wacu Cultural Village. Here, you will experience traditional Rwandan lifestyle from the pre-colonial period. The village offers a variety of cultural experiences and is probably the best way to get to know the local people, their culture, and their ways of living.
Agricultural tourism will be part of the wider experience, where guests can join local people in their agricultural fields to work and learn about their work, harvest, and participate in food preparation and making processes like millet grinding using stones.
The highlight of the experience is IGITARAMO, where everyone gathers around the campfire with drums and local dances before sunset. Storytellers recount stories and riddles of old Rwanda, with everyone seated around the fire.
End your day with dinner and an overnight stay at the Davinci Gorilla Lodge. Don't miss this incredible
After breakfast, we will depart at 7:30 am as we head off to the Volcanoes National Park Headquarters for another primate trek experience (Golden Monkey Trek) Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda offers Golden monkeys trekking. This unique experience allows guests in groups of up to eight to look for and discover golden monkeys within their natural habitat.
The monkeys are incredibly active and enjoy showing off to tourists and researchers that they encounter daily. The monkeys can be found closer to the base of the volcano and enjoy eating the bamboo vegetation in the area.
After the trek, we will return to our accommodation, freshen up, lunch, and we start our scenic 2.5 hour scenic drive to Kigali. Upon arrival, we will proceed with Kimironko Market visit for your souvenirs.
