Tour Overview

The Jewish presence in Andalusia left us the Jewish quarters of Córdoba, Jaén and Seville, as well as writers, poets and philosophers. A journey to discover the legacy of an intellectual and economic culture in a turbulent time.

In medieval times, the Jews were one of the most prosperous communities in Al Andalus. Their presence in Córdoba, Jaén, Seville and Lucena left an indelible mark on these cities as a heritage of their own history. Sebastián de la Obra, director of the Casa de Sefarad in Córdoba, explains that Andalusia has seen the greatest splendour of Judaism in Europe and claims the importance of the intangible heritage of historical memory, the appreciation of the vestiges of this era characterised by cultural coexistence.

Itinerary

Day 1

At the indicated time, arrival at the airport / train station. Private transfer to the hotel and accommodation.

In the afternoon, after lunch (free), guided visit to the Alcázar of Seville and the Jewish quarter. When we talk about the Jewish quarter of Seville, we associate it directly with the well-known Santa Cruz neighborhood, full of evocative alleys, corners to get lost in memory and stories that remind us of characters that perhaps existed or perhaps did not exist. But did you know that the Jewish quarter went far beyond this neighborhood? We invite you to walk with us through its streets and monuments. You will not be disappointed. The Sevillian Jewish quarter occupied a large area of the city, of which the Santa Cruz neighborhood was a part but not the only one. It was also made up of the surroundings of the Church of Santa María la Blanca and those of San Bartolomé, which
Together with the Church of Santa Cruz they were built on the old synagogues that were established in Seville, in turn built on old mosques that Fernando III, and later Alfonso X, had ceded to the Jewish community after the reconquest of the city in 1248. Visit of about 4 hours.

After the visit, return to the hotel, free dinner and accommodation.

Day 2

In the morning, after breakfast, we will move to Córdoba. But first we will make a stop on the way to visit the beautiful city of Carmona. The San Blas neighborhood is one of the most beautiful corners of white architecture in Andalusia, a hidden neighborhood in the interior of the city where the Sephardic mark was very important due to the number of buildings that it had and that to a lesser extent are preserved . We will walk until we reach the Puerta del Alcázar of Seville, with its spectacular views of the city, we will visit the priory of Santa María, known as the “sister” of the Cathedral of Seville. Visit of about 3 hours.

We continue our journey until we reach Écija, where we will enjoy lunch in an exclusive restaurant located in a privileged enclave, inside the Benamejí Palace. dated from the 18th century and where the city museum is located.

At the end of lunch, we continue our journey until we reach Córdoba. Check-in and accommodation (free time dinner)

Day 3

After breakfast, our mate will meet you at the hotel to begin the guided visit to the Jewish quarter of Córdoba. In this neighborhood of medieval origin
Jews lived for several centuries, from the 10th to the 15th century. It is also called “the white neighborhood” in reference to its houses with whitewashed walls. In the neighborhood, the Synagogue, the Plaza de Judá Leví, the Municipal Souk, or the Plazuela de Maimónides stand out.
The Jewish people reached their maximum prosperity in the 11th and 12th centuries, at that time Córdoba was a well-known place for commerce and its mosque was already one of the most admired, as well as its universities and its library.

We finish the visit with the masterpiece of the Caliphate of Córdoba, visiting the Mosque-Cathedral. Visit of about 3 hours

Day 4

It was known as the “Pearl of Sepharad”. Its cultural splendor can be compared to that reached by the Spanish-Hebrew literary circles of Córdoba and Granada during the Caliphate and the Taifa kingdoms. In the Sierra de Aras, legend has it that Noah’s Ark ended its stormy journey there, hence the name and sacred place for Christianity in Sierra de Araceli (Ararat). Lucena is together with Toledo and Córdoba, one of the most important Sephardic places in Europe. Its architectural and historical legacy is unequivocal and of great value. It was inhabited only by Jews between the 9th and 12th centuries.

After breakfast, we will make a private excursion to Lucena from Córdoba, to see these important places as well as the Jewish cemetery, rescued 7 years ago after some archaeological interventions and that today is a cemetery in use for the community. We will visit the hermitage of Araceli, in the legendary enclave of the Sierra de Aras, to finish with a visit to the church of San Mateo, a first-rate Baroque work where the Masonic footprint is also palpable.

We will have lunch in the downtown area of the city, near the parish of San Mateo, in the central square, where we can enjoy the coming and going of the people of the beautiful city of Lucena. Approximate duration of the excursion: 6 hours

At the end of lunch, return to the hotel. Free afternoon and dinner. accommodation

Day 5

We leave Córdoba behind to cross the entire “sea” of olive trees until we reach Jaén. Upon arrival, we will take a guided tour of the most relevant Serfadi enclaves. The current street of Santa Cruz marks the location of the Jewish quarter of Jaén, a neighborhood accessed through the Puerta de Baeza that today leads us to the Plaza de los Huérfanos, where a large Menorah -the typical Hebrew seven-branched candelabrum- serves as a tribute to the Jews of the Sephardic diaspora.

Places such as the Arab Baths of the Villadompardo Palace, the house of the famous counselor and diplomat Ibn-Shaprut and even the cathedral, whose head is presided over by the Mona, a character dressed in the Jewish habit, also keep his memory.

We will have lunch in a restaurant in the downtown area, tasting tasty dishes that recreate the Sephardic tradition such as spinach and cheese canutillos with honey sauce, lamb tabouleh with honey, plums, orange couscous and dried fruits, olives seasoned in the style Sephardic and the overwhelming almond cake.

After lunch, we continue the trip to Granada, the Nasrid capital and home to one of the most important Jewish communities. Check-in and accommodation.

In the afternoon, our guide will give us a guided tour of the Realejo Jewish Quarter, this route will be accompanied by a tapas tasting during the tour, making stops at traditional taverns in the neighborhood. It was the Jewish quarter when the Arabs came to the city. They called it Garnata al-Yahud (Granada of the Jews) and, from the 8th to the 15th centuries, both coexisted alternating periods of respect and tranquility with others of greater difficulties.

After the visit, transfer to the hotel and accommodation

Day 6

We cannot say goodbye to Andalusia and be in Granada, without visiting the quintessential monument of Andalusian architecture such as the Alhambra.

In the morning, we will make a private guided tour of the monument, visiting the Nasrid Palaces, the Generlife Gardens, the Alcazaba and the Palace of Carlos V. A very complete visit lasting 4 hours.

At the end, we will move to the Albyzin neighborhood to enjoy lunch with spectacular views of the Nasrid palace.

After lunch, we return to the hotel to check-out and move to the Granada / Malaga airport or train station.
