Discover why this is the most popular trek in the Annapurna region of Nepal. The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a photographer’s dreams come true from Poon Hill (3210m) where there are some of the most stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. You can see many towering snow-covered peaks, such as Annapurna South (7219m), Machapuchare (6993m), Hiunchuli, Annapurna III, Dhampus peak and Dhulariri II. You will also enjoy the experience of Gurung and Magar village life and feel the authentic warmth of the locals while passing through Ulleri, Ghorepani, and Ghandruk.
This trek takes you through lush green forests alive with beautiful white, pink and red rhododendrons that make you constantly grab for your camera. This trek is ideally suited for families whose goal is to witness first-hand the magnificent views without having to go through the acclimatization process necessary when trekking to higher elevations.
The trail heads through the Modi Khola Valley before arriving at Tikhedhunga. After crossing a suspension bridge over the Modi Khola we start to climb the 3300 steps to Ulleri hill and pass through a rhododendron forest before coming to the Magar Village of Ghorepani (2855m). If you want to capture the dawn views at Poon Hill and watch the sunrise on the Annapurna Ranges you will have to be up before daybreak. Watching the gradual rise of the sun shining off the mountains will leave you stunned and rewarded for your effort of getting up early. There are magnificent 180 degree views of of Dhaulagiri (8167m), Tukuche (6920m), Dhampus, Nilgiri (2637m), Annapurna South (8091), Bhara, Sikhar and Machapuchare (Fishtail - 6993m). On the return to Pokhara we pass through the gorgeous Gurung village of Ghandruk with its traditional style of houses with stone roofs - and an amazing mountain backdrop. This is an all-season trek.
Sherpa Expedition and Trekking also offers a condensed 4 day version of this trek, as well as others in the Annapurna region. We can also customize a trek just for you depending on your schedule. On arrival at the airport, a representative from Sherpa Expedition & Trekking will be there to greet you and take you to your hotel in Thamel where dinner is included. You will have time to do some last-minute shopping or find a nice café where you can sit back and relax.
Today we have a 6-7 hour road trip to Pokhara Valley and its stunning Phewa Tal (lake) and will then check in to your hotel close to Phewa Tal. Along the way, you can sit back, relax, and admire the changing countryside of rivers, valleys, and terraced farmlands on the surrounding hills. There is plenty to see at Lakeside with its many shops, bars, and restaurants. You will enjoy sitting by the lake watching the sunset over the mountains as the sun goes down.
Today we have a short drive of around 1:25 hours from Pokhara via the charming Lumle Village that sits perched on the mountainside and then continues on to Nayapul (1050m). The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek begins at Nayapul and after a 30-minute trek reaches Birethanti where you will be requested to show your tourist permit at the checkpoint. We follow the trail along the banks of the Modi Khola (river) with a brief stop at a teahouse along the way, and then after another 3 -4-hour trek we arrive at the beautiful village of Tikhedhunga.
Today we have a 2-hour steep ascent to Ulleri (2070m) and then on to the Magar village of Banthanti from where we have some truly superb views of Mt. Machapuchare (6997m - Fishtail), Hiunchuli (6441m), and Annapurna South (7219m). After heading through a lush white, pink, and red - flowering rhododendron forest we cross a bridge before coming to Ghorepani Village where we again have some great views of several enormous peaks, such as Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Annapurna that appears in the background. Ghorepani is a warm and friendly place to sit back, relax, and take in the wonderful views.
Poon Hill is famous for offering some of the finest views of the Annapurna Ranges – especially at sunrise and sunset. A very early morning start will see us reach the Poon Hill viewpoint early enough to watch the sunrise and the changing colors shimmering off the mountains, such as Dhaulagiri (8167m), Annapurna I (8091m), Annapurna II (7937m), Annapurna III (7855m), Annapurna IV (7525m), Annapurna South (729m), Nilgiri (6940m), Tukuche (6920m), Varaha Shikhar (7847m) & Lamjung Himal (6931m). After madly capturing the moment with your camera we will return for breakfast at Ghorepani, from where we head to Tadapani via the scenic trail through Deurali (meaning ridge in Nepali) until we come to Tadapani Village.
We have an easy trek today through an oak and rhododendron forest with wildflowers present on the trail that add to the stunning beauty of this area. We then come to the predominantly Gurung village of Ghandruk with its marvelous views of Annapurna South, Gangapurna, (7455m), Machapuchare, Annapurna III and Hiunchuli. Ghandruk is the 2nd largest Gurung village in Nepal with a population of 4748 people. It has a rich culture, a museum and a Buddhist monastery. Most fascinating is its distinctive style of architecture with most of the houses having slate tiled roofs and stone walls. It is as if time stood still. From here we head back to Pokhara for the night.
Today we head by road back to Kathmandu. If you happen to be sitting on the left side of the bus you will get to see the river gorges, mountains, small settlements, and terraced farmlands. Once back in Kathmandu you will be taken back to your hotel where you can relax or wander around Thamel. Breakfast included.
