sea level, spans over 3,169 hectares of rolling plateaus, cloud forests, and montane
grasslands. Discovered by planter Thomas Farr in the early 19th century and
named after Governor Sir Robert Wilmot Horton, the park is a sanctuary for
endemic flora and fauna. Highlights include the dramatic World’s End escarpment, a 900-meter
cliff offering panoramic views, and the cascading Baker’s Fall. Horton Plains is the source of Sri Lanka’s major
rivers, including Mahaweli, Walave, and Kelani, and is surrounded by the
majestic peaks of Mount Kirigalpotta
Kanda and Mount Thotupola Kanda.

Explore the historical Portuguese Fort (Parangi Kotuwa), built in the 17th century at the mouth of the Bentota River, marking the southern boundary of Portuguese-held territory. The fort later became a Dutch colonial rest house and a British coastal sanatorium, celebrated by Sir James Emerson Tennent for its cool, shaded park by the beach.
