Tour Overview

Embark on an extraordinary 6-day journey through Uganda's most renowned primate habitats, tracking two of Africa's most fascinating great apes the playful chimpanzees of Kibale and the majestic mountain gorillas of Bwindi. This expertly crafted safari takes you deep into the lush rainforests of western Uganda, offering immersive encounters with our closest genetic relatives in their natural environments.

Your adventure begins in Kibale National Park, famously dubbed the "Primate Capital of the World," where you'll trek through dense tropical forest in search of habituated chimpanzee communities. Beyond chimps, this biodiverse hotspot is home to over a dozen primate species, including the charismatic red colobus and L'Hoest's monkeys.

From Kibale, your journey continues south through Uganda's breathtaking countryside, passing through Queen Elizabeth National Park's Ishasha sector renowned for its tree-climbing lions before arriving at the misty heights of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Here, in one of Africa's most ancient and biologically rich forests, you'll experience the profound privilege of spending an hour with a family of endangered mountain gorillas.

This itinerary balances adventure with comfort, cultural encounters with wildlife immersion, and active trekking with scenic travel. Whether you're a dedicated primatologist or a first-time visitor to Africa, this safari delivers moments that will stay with you forever

Itinerary

Day 1

Your driver-guide will meet you at Entebbe International Airport or your hotel in Kampala for a short safari briefing before departing for western Uganda. The scenic drive takes you through lush countryside, traditional homesteads, and thriving tea plantations that carpet the rolling hills. You'll stop en route for lunch and to stretch your legs. Continue to Kibale National Park, arriving in the late afternoon at your lodge. Settle in, enjoy the forest views, and prepare for tomorrow's primate adventure.

Day 4

This is the day you've been waiting for. After an early breakfast with your packed lunch, proceed to the park headquarters for a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. You'll be allocated to a specific gorilla family based on your group's fitness level and preferences.

Then begins the trek into the ancient, mist-covered forest. Bwindi is one of the most biologically diverse forests in Africa, home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. The trek can take anywhere from 1 to 7 hours depending on the gorillas' location. The terrain can be steep and muddy, but your efforts will be rewarded beyond measure.

Once you locate a family, you'll spend one unforgettable hour in their presence. Watch the silverback protect his family, mothers nurse their infants, and youngsters playfully tumble through the vegetation. The experience of locking eyes with a wild mountain gorilla is profoundly moving and will stay with you forever.

After the trek, return to your lodge to celebrate, rest, and share stories with fellow trekkers.

Accommodation in Bwindi: Ruzogo Safari Lodge

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch (packed), Dinner

Day 5

After the exertion of gorilla trekking, today offers a more relaxed pace with meaningful cultural engagement. Following breakfast, you'll visit a local community near Bwindi perhaps a Batwa pygmy village or a local homestead. The Batwa are the forest's original inhabitants, and learning about their traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyle, their displacement when the park was established, and their current challenges provides important context for your visit.

You'll experience traditional dancing, learn about medicinal plants, and hear stories passed down through generations. This visit supports community tourism initiatives that directly benefit local people. The afternoon is yours to relax at the lodge, enjoy the views, or take a short forest walk.

Day 6

Enjoy a final breakfast overlooking the Bwindi forest before checking out and beginning your journey back to Kampala or Entebbe. The drive offers one last opportunity to absorb Uganda's stunning landscapes—the terraced hills, winding roads, and vibrant rural life. You'll stop in Mbarara for an en-route lunch and again at the Uganda Equator in Kayabwe for photos and souvenir shopping.

You'll be dropped at Entebbe International Airport for your departure flight or at your hotel in Kampala in the late afternoon or early evening, marking the end of your unforgettable primate safari.
